ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Figure drawing is my passion but formal life drawing bores the hell out of me. There is nothing more lifeless to me than a work I have made from a static model; disengaged from the artist and, by proxy, the viewer. When I paint, I talk to the person I’m working with. I establish a connection between myself and my subject. The work becomes a record of our conversation, a physical manifestation of time shared. I paint with the model directly in my abstracts, the person’s skin; their flesh and bone, pushes the paint away and leaves a mark on the surface. The collaboration between artist and model gets locked into the work. My goal is not to capture the form of the person, their surface beauty, but the emotion that lies beneath. The other side of the mirror; deeper than skin.
