Dana’s Mandala – Vishnu

fisheyed Abstract, Maps Leave a Comment

Monotype and Oil on Hardboard 48″ x 48″

I remember this from Joseph Campbell:

“Brahma sits on a lotus, the symbol of divine energy and divine grace. The lotus grows from the navel of Vishnu, who is the sleeping god, whose dream is the universe.”

When I started this with Dana, I had no idea where it was going, as you can see from the process. I found the lotus in the center and the leafy shapes in the corners, but the torsos on the sides left me perplexed. As in most cases when I get stuck, I ask my the person who made the print some questions. I interviewed Dana about her favorite fruits and vegetables (there’s a theme in there somewhere, but it’s still in the jello stage). She told me she liked artichokes and blood oranges. I combined the two and made the center torso the focal point.
